透明的下午@无墙幼儿园
2024-2025
"The Kindergarten Without Walls" is a nonprofit art and education space within an urban village in Binglianxincun, Haikou, Hainan. Every Friday night and weekend, dozens of left-behind or migrant children from the neighborhood gather here for play and activities. The space provides a haven for exploration, where, through careful observation of the children's interests and needs, various educational programs, games, and art activities are introduced. In 2024-2025, Transparent Afternoon collaborated with the kindergarten, organizing community-based art activities.

Mainstream narratives often approach the city from a linear, centralized perspective. Yet for children growing up in the hidden corners of urban villages, life and community unfold in multi-dimensional, wild, and ever-growing ways—a holographic mix of emotions, movements, and relationships, where every crack can become a secret base.
In Ratopia, we explored folktales and myths about mice across cultures, while listening to children share their own memories and stories about mice in everyday life. Then, children transform into “little mice,” drawing on their memories and imaginations of life in the urban village to build mouse-holes using sustainable materials.
These individual mouse-holes are then connected into a complete mouse world: a multi-dimensional community map shaped by children’s perspectives. Through sewer endoscopes, projections, and oral storytelling, we collectively created a live, magic world of rats nurtured within the city’s cracks and margins.

As an extension workshop of Ratopia Summer Camp (shu tuo bang shu tuo ban), we approach the sound “shu” from two directions: language and food. Here, the tongue becomes a mixer for both words and snacks. The “shu” sound vibrates, mutates, and ferments in the mouth — through rhyming, free association, word invention, and sound imitation, a stream-of-consciousness shu/rat-language begins to form.
These transformations branch into three paths. Some children stretch words into stories; others learn to use AI to turn sounds into images (such as shǔ shǔ/potato mouse). At the same time, shifts in homophones correspond to real ingredients: dropped into hot oil, “shu” crackles and pops, transforming into edible sounds — chips (shu pian), fries (shu tiao), corn kernels (yu mi su), crispy chicken strips (xiang su ji). As they are eaten, “shu” is tasted and reshaped through the body.

Let’s draw poop! People’s poop, animals’ poop, alien’s poop. We can learn what different animals’ poop looks like, and which animals like to eat poop. You can even draw your own poop. Sometimes people’s poop and animals’ poop look the same, and sometimes every poop comes out in a different shapes. And I discovered that poop can also be frozen into an iceberg, which is really amazing.

Boom Boom Magic: Finding your inner fairy guide!
Boom Boom Magic Academy is now open for admission! Witch Jia will guide you on a journey to unlock your inner magic and discover your fairy guide. Perhaps it's the moss princess from a lost kingdom, a bubble-gum-turning-into-slime monster, or the furry sea horse hiding in your ears!
But before we begin, we’ll need to go through some "enrollment" practices: warm-ups, visualization meditation, and "psychic games." Children will experiment with their imagination and "clairvoyant" senses, visualizing emotions, memories, and feelings, and interpreting them through a fairy tale lens.
To finish, we'll gather these visions and weave them into an improv performance—the "Fairies' Gathering"—where we interact with the inner fairies of others. Through body language, we will express, accept, and release emotions.
In this workshop, children will explore mindful, creative ways to understand emotions while building empathy for the feelings of others.

From unseen labor of housewives to pinhole cameras, from hidden Buddha statues atop stupas to overly bright light sources that disappear into the walls, from omnipresent yet invisible censorship to countless other forms of erasure—invisibility exists at the edge of perception and in what power structures choose to conceal.
In this group gathering, participants shared personal stories related to invisibility, then played “I Can’t See Me”, a word-guessing game in which terms symbolizing different invisible states were placed on each other’s foreheads and guessed based on others’ descriptions. The game gradually unfolded into improvisational performance and collective creation, sparking reflection on social issues and the complex relationship between visibility and power.
The entire process was recorded by a hidden camera, adding an additional layer to our exploration of what is seen, unseen, and deliberately obscured.

In this collective action, we gathered a group to visit the matchmaking park together. As Chinese individuals, by the time we reach our 20s or 30s, many of us face pressure from our families to marry, revealing how often marriage operates as a deeply gendered and socially regulated institution. Participants brought with them their parents' expectations, LGBTQ+ information, divorced parent bio, and AI-generated content... (on the right) to engage with people at the matchmaking park in Shanghai. These interactions naturally sparked discussions on critical issues such as gender inequality, heteronormativity and LGBTQ+ rights within the context of marriage structures.

When you take public transportation, stay in a hotel, or use a public restroom, there are hidden "eyes" watching you from the shadows, subtly invading your sense of security in spaces where you should feel at ease. Does privacy still exist?
Transparent Afternoon, in collaboration with XCJ Making-Lab, will host workshops focused on technical countermeasures against the rising issue of pinhole camera voyeurism. Through this, we aim to address and provide practical solutions to this very real and invasive problem, while deepening our understanding of the socio-political implications of privacy and security in everyday spaces.

Community-based project & alternative art education, collaborated with Shanzhai (Counterfeit) MFA
Love Me Hate Me Magic Academy is not a school—it is a two-week summoning, conjured by Miaozi from Shanzhai (Counterfeit) MFA and Jia from Transparent Afternoon, acting as co-principals.
The institution is divided into two departments--Pure Love and Pure Hate, not to reconcile them, but to let both forces fully manifest. Neither is purified. Neither is resolved.
Over the course of two dense weeks, the Academy repeatedly opens and collapses. Collective performance, art workshops, occult studies, folk and forbidden rituals, zhiguai (tales of the strange), games, social interventions, magic clubbing at night, witchy picnics by day, and ceremonial openings and graduations form the Academy’s cyclical structure. Within the Academy, the roles of student and professor are reversible.
Participants are invited to confront emotions that are suppressed, misdirected, or domesticated by social systems: desire and resentment in intimate relationships, expectation and punishment within family and social structures, the disciplined circulation of love and hate across gendered and social orders, accumulated forms of aversion toward authority, procedural obedience, and the moralization of order itself....These emotions are not healed. They are extracted, translated, and sublimed...
Here, love and hate become transmissible energies—activated through creativity and unnamed forms of magic.

Crybaby Club & Tear Brew
“Professor”: Jia Dingdongduang the second
Come over here and cry wildly with us.
This is not just an emotional release. Here, vulnerability is summoning magic, and tears are weapons of alchemy.
You may cry until your fists hit the ground, or practice the advanced discipline of tears reaching the corners of the eyes without falling. Together, we will explore different tear triggers and crying techniques, and collect rare tear specimens: Pure Love Tears, Pure Hate Tears, Forbidden Tears, Boiling Tears, Quantum-Entangled Tears…
These crystallized tears will then be DIY-ed into magical custom brews, to cleanse our bodies, minds, and spirits.
Group Past Life Regression
“Professor”: Jia Dingdongduang the second
A light-weight collective past-life hypnosis.
In a relaxed, dreamlike state, you will explore your subconscious, glimpse your past lives, and seek answers to life’s uncertainties.
Magic, Art, and Social Justice
“Professor”: Jia Dingdongduang the second
Throughout history, persecuted and marginalized occult communities have often embodied intersecting experiences of multiple forms of minoritization. Witches, shamans, ethnic minorities, queers—they have repeatedly been rendered heretical. The cultural practices and folk belief systems they carry have been positioned as the opposite of Western scientific rationality, labeled as “dirty,” “primitive,” “superstitious,” or “sexually deviant,” and systematically excluded and suppressed.
“We have learned what is logical, rational, objective, tactical, strategic, and so on. We have also learned what is subjective, illogical, emotional, intuitive, sensitive, and so on—and these are considered ‘feminine,’ and therefore ‘negative’...”
This angry observation was made in 1981 by Swiss artist Doris Stauffer, who founded the famous “Witches’ Classes,” and it resonates closely with contemporary sociologist Patricia Hill Collins’ critique of white male–centered traditions of rational academic knowledge.
In this theory session, we will see how, across histories of oppression and resistance, the love and hate of marginalized communities have also generated magic.
Together, through art and social movements, we let it crackle, clash, and explode—bang!
Magic Blade Lab
“Professor”: Vis the whetstone
Bring your cleaver. Consecrate your weapon.
Grind what cannot be swallowed—unchewable rage, choking powerlessness, everyday pressure—until it sharpens into a blade.
We cannot pierce power directly, but we can sharpen hatred together: to cut through tangled karma, institutional ropes, and the manipulation of language.
You will grind it by hand (the workshop provides different magic stones), write your spell, carve your sigils, and breathe intention into the enchanted blade.
Note: Remember—knives do not pass metro security checks!!
Psychic Game and the Oppresion of Love
“Professor”: Jia Dingdongduang the second
When I look at you, you become an atmospheric spirit, a swaying pavilion, a boat made of mist…
Are these images my projections, or echoes of your past?
If we loosen the grip of linear logic and judgment, synesthetic perception becomes a capacity we all possess. It is not merely synesthesia or imagination—it is a key that opens other dimensions, allowing us to read the messages transmitted by spirit.
In this workshop, we will combine spirit-channeling practices with Theatre of the Oppressed, letting the body become the medium of ritual. Crossing identity, flesh, and distance, we enter a state of presence to sense the existence of others. Ritual can shift into theater at any moment, allowing hidden emotions and desires within relationships to take form—possessing bodies as concrete characters and weaving themselves into a collective performance.
If you are willing to explore, within a safe space, those blurry, unfinished relational cycles—the ones you wish to release yet still find yourself entangled in—you are warmly invited to join us in opening new dimensions through magic and theater.
